Deutscher James Bond!

In Germany, we were tasked with the challenge of teaching a game to our host family and playing it with them. I taught them how to play multiple games, however, the game I wanted to highlight is a game called James Bond. Here are the rules:

  1. Shuffle the cards.
  2. Deal 48 of the cards in piles of four evenly among all the players.
  3. The last four cards go face up in the middle of where you are playing.
  4. On the count of three say, “James Bond!” And all the players pick up only one of their piles of four at a time.
  5. The object of the game is to be the first person to get four of the same number cards in all of their piles of four.
  6. If there is one ace in the middle and you have three aces in your pile, you can discard the card that is not an ace and pick up the ace in the middle. Then you put the pile of four off to the side and try to get other piles of four! Essentially, you are trading cards out of your hand in order to achieve the objective.
  7. When a player completes the objective, they must have all their piles face up on the table, and they have to yell “James Bond!” to win.

Teaching this to my host family was a challenge because I taught it to them in German; struggling with some translations like calling “piles” “mountains” or calling “trading” “changing”. Nevertheless, at the end of teaching, the message was received and we played the game. I won a few times and then the rest of the family won a few rounds each. The game was a hit and we would often play it after meals, whereas before, we wouldn’t have much ‘family time’ after meals. I found that it brought all of us closer together, and we ended up playing even more games like “Slap Jack” and “Speed” which were all a blast.

I took some pictures of me playing the game with my host mom:

German games

I played a lot of games while I was over in Germany, some of which include Trouble, Uno and the game featured above Phase 10. I felt like games were a great way to get to know the people around me, even if I couldn't communicate well with them. We would stay up late playing all kinds of games as a big family. It will be one memory that I will never forget.

Phase 10 - Amanda Eisenbeisz

Melissa and me playing Phase 10. Basically you have to complete 10 phases each, and whoever gets all 10 completed first, wins. I won this round, but maybe she’ll win the second.

Just Playing Around [GAPP Project -Britt W]

(Late night Uno games)

As we're coming to the end of our exchange program, my host family and I try to find time to play the American game I brought. So far it has been a hit between my host sister and I, causing us to be a little more competitive and more hysterical. The game I brought was the American culture version of uno. Which includes famous American landmarks to hot dogs eaten on the Forth of July. My host sister had learned the game super quick. In addition, she was excited to get some time to play a card game after a long day's of school. I on the other hand was not excited to have lost so much to my host sister during her first time playing the game. I will have my rematch!

In return I have learned some German games such as Mensch Ärgere Dich Nicht !, this game is not for the faint of heart. This game is like the German version of the Sorry! board game, which means it can be endless fun for such a long period of time. It is quite stressful to the point of some screaming and loud sighs coming from each player. Althought the stressful matches it is loads of fun and an activity for the whole family. But I cannot forget the mean games of Settlers of Catan I have watched. Personally I find Catan a little more labor intensive, so I will stick with Mensch Ärgere Dich Nicht !.

In conclusion my stay here in Germany has been a blast and playing the game was a great detox from our mobile devices. I wish the stay was a tad bit longer, but my experiences here have not been nothing short of amazing. In the mean time I will wait for the next German game night and hope to get my rematch soon.
